Barcelona makes me smile!

Update: I just wanted to let everyone know that apparently I had more than a few scrapes from my manhole incident.  That’s right … I have two sweet bruises surrounding the scrapes! They are purple and yellow and circular and I laugh whenever I see them in the mirror.  Hopefully, I’ll have time to post on southern France tomorrow because it is delightful!

Today was my last day in Barcelona and the whole time I’ve been here I’ve been trying to figure out how I feel about the city. It’s a nice city but not spectacular. It’s got character but I’m not sure I would say it’s unique. Basically I was very undecided about the whole thing. That is until I was walking back to my hostel tonight. That’s when I knew realized how much Barcelona made me smile and how the city had seduced me into loving it.

Churches that take more than a few decades to build are sweet

Yesterday I journeyed out early into the cloudy, unpleasant Barcelona to take in La Sagrada Familia and since I was on a Gaudi kick, Park Guell.  My idea was to get there early to avoid massive crowds; it worked as I only had to wait about 15 minutes for the lift while as I was leaving the estimated wait time was over an hour: gross!

Barcelona – people and pigeons … mostly people

After the trip from hell, and I do mean the trip from hell considering it took about 9 hours longer than it should have, I got barely any sleep, my pants were wet for half of it, and I almost lost my Iron Ring, I arrived in Barcelona about 4 hours after I should have.  It was tiring and not at all pleasant but I was bound and determined to get some sightseeing in regardless of how much I just wanted to crawl into my bed and sleep. Madrid … thought I left the Scottish weather behind …

I arrived in Madrid the night before last expecting warm weather and sunny skies.  What I got was periodic rain and thundershowers.  That being said the temperature is 17 degrees so I can´t complain too much.  Being Canadian, I couldn´t  not talk about the weather first but now on to the good stuff.  Not having regular computer access I thought I´d provide a few highlights of Madrid thus far on my afternoon siesta.  Unfortuantly there are no pictures …
